<image:title>Blog - Birth Coaching: A Different Way to Prepare for Labor</image:title>
<image:caption>I want to invite you into a moment that we have the honor of being apart of often. Picture this. We’re sitting together with a couple preparing for their baby. Maybe there’s tea on the table, maybe someone is curled up on the couch. The conversation starts slowly. At first, there’s a little quiet hesitancy in the air — especially from dad. Mom is curious but unsure. Dad is supportive, but not totally convinced what role he even has in this whole thing. They’ve read things online. They’ve heard stories from friends. They’ve taken in enough information to know birth is a big deal — but not enough to feel settled about it. Many couples come to us feeling overwhelmed by the amount of pregnancy and birth information online, unsure how to actually prepare for labor in a way that feels meaningful. So they start where most couples do: a little uncertain, a little nervous, curious but still reaching into the air hoping to grab hold of something that actually helps.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - How to Write a Postpartum Plan (with Template!) - What Is a Postpartum Plan?</image:title>
<image:caption>A postpartum plan is a simple but powerful tool designed to help you prepare for the often-overlooked season that begins after birth. Just like a birth plan outlines your preferences and support for labor and delivery, a postpartum plan helps you think through what kind of care, rest, and resources you'll need in the days, weeks, and months after your baby arrives. But more than a checklist, a postpartum plan asks you to consider: Who is going to support you, not just the baby? What helps you feel grounded and nourished? How do you want your home and heart to feel during this transition? It’s not about scripting every moment (because, like birth, postpartum rarely goes exactly to plan). Instead, it’s about creating a foundation—a supportive framework—that allows you to enter this tender season with intention, not just improvisation. Many families prepare extensively for labor, yet are surprised by how raw and disorienting postpartum can feel. We believe this season deserves just as much care and preparation. A good postpartum plan can help reduce stress, improve rest, and strengthen communication with your support team. It lets you name your needs before you’re too exhausted to articulate them. In our work as doulas, we’ve seen time and again how much smoother the transition into new parenthood can be when families take time to prepare for this part of the journey, not just the birth itself.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Real Birth Stories: Why Support Matters - Julia’s Story:</image:title>
<image:caption>When Julia went into labor, she had envisioned a slow and steady build through each stage. But as birth often does, her story unfolded differently. Labor progressed much faster than expected, and by the time I arrived, she had already moved swiftly through early and active labor and was deep in transition. Julia and her husband were doing their best to create a calm, centered environment—but the intensity of transition was setting in. She was struggling to find her rhythm between contractions, her body moving faster than her mind had time to process. In those moments, I stayed close—offering steady reminders to breathe, soft encouragement, and a calming touch. Sometimes, that’s all it takes to help bring someone back to center. Later, Julia shared: “My labor progressed quickly, and Heather maintained her calm and assisted my husband with supporting me throughout the process. Her knowledge of labor and delivery was so helpful with offering different positions and techniques during labor. Having someone be a part of your birth is such an intimate experience, and I would choose having Heather present with me over and over.” That moment reminded me, again, why presence matters. Not to fix or control—but to steady, to support, and to gently anchor someone in truth when everything feels like it’s moving too fast.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Real Birth Stories: Why Support Matters - Megan’s Story:</image:title>
<image:caption>Megan came into her pregnancy with a beautiful openness—ready to trust the process, but also carrying a quiet strength that met each curve in the road. During our prenatal visits, I could see how intentional she was. She asked thoughtful questions, made space for her emotions, and leaned into each part of the journey. When she called late one night to say labor might be starting, I didn’t hesitate. She lived a bit further out, so I packed up and drove over the pass to be with her. By the time I arrived, things had slowed down—a normal, but sometimes frustrating shift. I encouraged her to rest and reminded her this was still progress. She let go of any pressure to make labor “look” a certain way and truly allowed her body to settle. I rested in the guest room nearby, checking in throughout the night, while she got real, restorative sleep—one of the most valuable things in early labor. By morning, her contractions returned with more rhythm and strength. Megan was calm and grounded, and I supported her through each wave with simple tools and gentle guidance. She moved through labor with peaceful presence, choosing to wait to use certain comfort measures until her body gave her the signal. She stayed tuned in, steady, and open to each suggestion and shift I made. Together, we decided it was the right time to head to the birth center, knowing the possibility of a stall was behind us. She continued laboring with a focus that was both gentle and strong. I stayed close—offering support as needed, speaking encouragement over her, and holding space as she brought her baby into the world with grace. Later, Megan shared: “Hiring Ezer Birth as my doula and newborn photographer was the BEST and most impactful decision I made for my birth and postpartum experience. Kathryn made me feel so safe and heard throughout each prenatal visit and provided so much wisdom and experience. During my birth, she was so observant, attentive, and thoughtful! Her sweet gracious spirit truly embodies peace and strength. I can’t imagine my birth story without her!” What stood out to me throughout Megan’s care—both prenatally and in birth—was her honesty. She was never afraid to name what was real, ask hard questions, or reflect deeply on what this season was stirring in her. And what I didn’t expect, but was so moved by, was how deeply encouraging she was to me—not just as her doula, but as a person. Her words felt like they came from someone who really saw me, and supporting her felt less like “work” and more like walking alongside a friend. Megan’s story reminded me again that doula support isn’t just about guiding someone through labor. It’s about trust, presence, and the mutual strength that rises when we walk these sacred roads together.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Real Birth Stories: Why Support Matters - When you read words like these—about calm presence, reassurance, and peace—you start to see a picture emerge. Birth is not just a physical experience. It’s spiritual, emotional, and deeply vulnerable. And in the middle of it all, support isn’t just about having someone there—it’s about who is there and why. As doulas, we believe support is sacred. It’s not about centering ourselves—it’s about helping anchor you back to truth when everything else feels overwhelming. It’s about being a steady presence who knows your heart, your hopes, and your story—because we’ve spent time building trust long before your labor begins.</image:title>
<image:caption>In the unpredictability of birth, we don’t promise control—we offer presence rooted in peace, a peace that comes not from perfect circumstances, but from truth that steadies. We remind you of what you already carry: strength, courage, design, purpose. And when the waves feel strong, we help you lean into what is unshakable. This is what it means to be an Ezer—a strong helper. Someone who stands beside you with compassion, wisdom, and unwavering support, reflecting the character of a God who is ever-near. Because in the end, it’s not just about how your birth unfolds—it’s about how you felt, how you were held, and what you remembered to be true, even in the hardest moments.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Do I Really Need a Doula If I Have a Midwife or Supportive Partner?</image:title>
<image:caption>It’s such a good question—honestly, one I asked myself before I became a doula, too. If you're preparing for birth and wondering if a doula is really necessary when you already have a midwife you trust or a partner who will be by your side… you’re not alone. It's a super common question, and honestly, a totally valid one. You’re doing the research. You’re being intentional about who will be in the room. And maybe part of you is wondering, “Isn’t that enough support already?” Or even, “Would having a doula feel like too many people?” Let’s talk through it together—no pressure, just a chance to understand how these roles are actually really different, and how a doula fits in alongside the rest of your team.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Our Stories & How We Became “Ezer” - Kathryn’s journey into birth work began in a different, but deeply connected, place—women’s ministry. From early on, she had a heart for walking with women through the highs and lows of life, and it became clear that she wanted to serve in a space where presence, support, and guidance were needed most.</image:title>
<image:caption>That desire led her to midwifery school. She loved learning the intricacies of birth and being near the sacred process of life beginning—but something felt incomplete. During her apprenticeship, she realized what she longed for most was to be emotionally and educationally present for women—to prepare them deeply, support them wholly, and walk beside them in a relational way that clinical care often doesn’t allow space for. So, she stepped away from midwifery and began the work of Ezer Birth—a business rooted in the kind of care she originally envisioned. Care that is informed, emotionally rich, spiritually grounded, and never rushed. Her heart for this work remains simple but profound: to help women feel seen, strong, and supported through one of life’s most powerful transitions.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Our Stories & How We Became “Ezer” - Heather’s journey to birth work began with a deep love for nourishment. With her Bachelors in Nutrition, she’s always been passionate about helping people understand how to care for their bodies well. But for a long time, she didn’t quite know how to narrow that passion into a focused calling—until she became pregnant. That season changed everything.</image:title>
<image:caption>Heather was shocked by how little nutritional support and education were available to women during pregnancy. If you wanted to learn this information, you really had to seek it out. That gap stirred something in her. As she dove deeper into the world of physiological birth, something shifted—not only in her mind but in her entire perspective. Beginning from a place where she blindly and completely trusted western medicine, she had always viewed birth as a medical event. But through education, research, and her own experience, she began to see birth as something designed —something her body was made to do, not fear. That knowledge gave her confidence, and that confidence carried her through two natural, physiological water births—her sons born just 13 months apart. After her own transformative experiences, she couldn’t keep this to herself. She continued her studies in perinatal nutrition and became a certified birth doula so she could advocate for and walk with other women in this powerful time of life.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - The Intersection of Faith & Birth - The Sanctifying Invitation of Birth:</image:title>
<image:caption>Though the pain of childbirth is a consequence of the fall, we are promised sanctification in our suffering (1 Peter 4:12-13). We may not always understand why birth is so painful, but in that very pain, we are invited to encounter Jesus in a way that is unique to women. Childbirth is not only about survival—it’s about redemption. When we lean into Him during labor, we experience His sanctifying work on a deep, intimate level. His desire for us is not simply to endure the pain, but to find purpose within it. Birth is an invitation to see life and death through His lens of grace and redemption. The narrative of fear, pain, panic, and chaos often put forward by the world can cloud our experience, but we can choose a different perspective. Instead of focusing on the pain and fear, we can focus on the life-giving narrative. We can embrace surrender, trust, peace, and faith that, while the path is difficult, God is there in every moment. Birth is sacred, and its design holds both mystery and beauty, inviting us to open our hearts to the deep work God desires to do in us. This truth applies no matter the type of birth—whether medicated, unmedicated, surgical, or otherwise. It's not about how you give birth, but the heart posture behind your birth choices. What is motivating your decisions? For every woman, this is deeply personal and profoundly intimate. Are your choices coming from a place of fear, control, or disconnection? Or are they rooted in trust, faith, and surrender? The specific path will look different for each woman, and that’s okay. The deeper question is: where is your heart in it? A Call to Surrender Death is part of life. As women, we are designed to give life, but part of that is surrendering to the process—acknowledging the vulnerability of it all. Pregnancy and birth are built-in invitations to this surrender. The beauty of pregnancy is that we are given nine months to prepare—to come to terms with the reality that labor is coming. We can’t procrastinate. The time will arrive when we must release control. And in this, there is grace. God is asking us for one thing: to let go and let Him be our peace in the midst of it all.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Choosing between a hospital, birth center, or home birth? - Many moms considering an unmedicated birth may initially feel that a hospital offers the security they need, providing a safety net in case of an emergency. It’s a natural sentiment, and while hospitals can certainly provide advanced medical care, it’s important to recognize that no location can fully guarantee safety in birth. Birth itself is shrouded in mystery, and while technology can monitor and intervene in the process, it cannot fully control the unfolding of life.</image:title>
<image:caption>In a hospital setting, you may experience continual monitoring and a structured timeline for labor progression, which can sometimes lead to interventions. Interventions, in my view, are any steps taken outside of the natural physiological process of birth. For example, membrane sweeps or the artificial rupture of membranes, or induction medications are part of the medical approach to managing labor, but they can pull you further from the natural physiological rhythm of birth.</image:caption>
</image:image>

<image:title>Blog - Choosing between a hospital, birth center, or home birth? - For many, the birth center serves as a middle ground between the hospital and a home birth. It offers a serene, private environment, supported by a midwife-led team that honors the natural process of birth with minimal intervention. While some moms find comfort in the more structured environment of a hospital, others find peace in the nurturing, low-key atmosphere of a birth center, where the focus is on letting labor unfold in a calm, supported way.</image:title>
<image:caption>From a safety perspective, the equipment available at a birth center is the same as what a homebirth midwife would bring— (example being: pitocin, for postpartum hemorrhage management, oxygen, and emergency equipment). The difference lies not in the tools or level of care, but in location. A birth center offers the benefit of being near a hospital, which can be reassuring to you in the case that there might be a need to transfer. However, this proximity to a hospital doesn’t inherently provide more safety than a home birth—it's simply a matter of convenience should the need for transfer arise. For some families, being closer to medical care can offer peace of mind, especially if they don’t have the ideal home setting for labor, if they live more rural, or if they simply prefer the option of a quick transition to hospital care if circumstances change. The birth center offers flexibility and freedom, allowing you to move, position, and manage your pain in a way that feels intuitive and comfortable for your body. Whether you're dreaming of a water birth or simply want to labor in a space designed with comfort in mind, a birth center can provide the right environment for a peaceful, empowered birth experience.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Choosing between a hospital, birth center, or home birth? - Home births offer a level of intimacy and comfort that few other birth settings can match. The experience of birthing in your own space, surrounded by loved ones and your chosen birth team, can create an environment that feels deeply personal, empowering, and connected. Choosing to birth at home is a choice rooted in trust—the trust that your body knows how to birth and that your midwife is there to support and guide you through it. The relationship you build with your midwife is one of the greatest advantages of a home birth. The continuity of care that comes with working with a single provider or small team from prenatal visits to postpartum is invaluable. It’s a relationship where your midwife becomes familiar with your birth vision, your fears, and your unique needs. Whether you seek a midwife who takes a hands-off approach, allowing labor to unfold naturally, or someone who offers more hands-on support during the process, this continuous care provides peace of mind that is difficult to find in other birth settings.</image:title>
<image:caption>Trusting in the home birth process involves overcoming fears and preparing mentally and emotionally throughout pregnancy. Prenatal work focused on addressing those fears and building a strong sense of confidence in your ability to birth at home can lead to a deeply empowering experience. The beauty of home birth lies in the comfort, privacy, and security of being in your own space, allowing you to labor and birth at your own pace. And postpartum, the immediate comfort of resting in your own bed creates a gentle, healing environment for both mother and baby. By the end of your pregnancy, the relationship you've built with your midwife should provide a deep sense of comfort and trust. By this time, you should feel comfortable enough in your relationship to release any remaining doubts, knowing your midwife understands your comfort level and your preferences—especially when it comes to knowing when you’d prefer to transfer to a hospital, if necessary. With this trust, you can truly let go, surrendering to the rhythm of your body and the natural unfolding of labor, knowing you’re supported every step of the way.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Choosing between a hospital, birth center, or home birth? - No matter where you choose to give birth, one constant that can provide unwavering support is a birth doula. As a birth doula, I serve as a guide prenatally, a companion during labor, and a resource postpartum. I can support you through shift changes at the hospital, transfers, or any other unexpected factors that may arise.</image:title>
<image:caption>A doula’s presence can provide comfort, emotional support, and advocacy no matter the setting, ensuring that your preferences are heard and respected. Ultimately, the most important thing is that you feel empowered and supported in your choices, no matter where you give birth. Each environment offers unique advantages and challenges, and the key is to choose the one that aligns best with your needs, comfort, and values.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Moving Through Winter - How Releasing Tension in the Lats and Hip Flexors Helps with Pelvic Alignment During Pregnancy (and some common pregnancy discomforts) During pregnancy, it’s common for the body to adopt a posture that creates an anterior pelvic tilt—where the front of your pelvis tips forward and the back of your pelvis tilts up. This arch in the back makes sense as your belly continue to grow while baby develops! This posture isn’t necessarily problematic, but if not addressed, it can make it more difficult for your baby to engage properly in the pelvis and may lead to discomfort in your lower back or hips.</image:title>
<image:caption>Now, you might be wondering how stretching muscles like your lats (the large muscles in your back) and hip flexors (muscles that connect the front of your hip to your spine) helps with this. Even though these muscles don’t directly control your pelvic floor muscles, they’re connected through fascia (a web-like connective tissue). When these muscles are tight, they can pull your pelvis into that anterior tilt.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/644062a0ff6fbb1b38176dfc/5ef14109-60d2-4801-b543-7a01321bed87/blog+movements.png</image:loc>
<image:title>Blog - Moving Through Winter - Hip Flexor Stretch with Lunge: Start by stepping one foot forward into a lunge position, keeping your back knee on the ground. Gently push your hips forward to feel a stretch in the front of your hip and thigh. As you hold this stretch focus on deep breaths, imagine your rib cage expanding. Hold this stretch for 5 deep belly breaths, switch to other leg, repeat. This opens up the hips and helps release tension in the hip flexors. Lat Stretch on Birth Ball: Kneel on the floor with your arms extended forward on a stability ball. Let your chest gently fall toward the floor while keeping your arms outstretched. This helps release tension in the lats and upper back. Repeat hold for the same amount of breaths in the first stretch.</image:title>
<image:caption>Cat/Cow Focusing on Pelvic Tilt: On your hands and knees, alternate between arching your back (like a cat) and dropping your belly toward the floor (like a cow). This movement helps release tension in both your lower back and your pelvic area, while also encouraging good pelvic positioning. While you are in the “cow position” make sure you are tucking your pelvis (rounding back) to get that good pelvic tilt.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Moving Through Winter - Row With Resistance Band (Lat Strengthening) Secure the band at chest height (e.g., door handle or foot while sitting). Grab both handles or ends of the band, with palms facing each other. Step back until there's tension in the band, then, with a straight back, pull the handles toward you, leading with your elbows and squeezing your shoulder blades together. Slowly release back to the starting position. Aim for 10–12 reps. Focus on keeping your chest open and avoiding rounding your back as you pull the band. Squat with Resistance Band (Hip Flexor Strengthening) Place a resistance band loop just above your knees. It should provide moderate resistance. Stand with feet shoulder-width apart, toes slightly outward. Press your knees outward against the band and lower your body as if sitting back into a chair. Keep knees in line with toes, not collapsing inward. Lower until thighs are parallel to the floor, or as deep as comfortable. Push through your heels, engaging glutes, and rise back to standing, continuing to press knees outward against the band. Perform 10–15 reps with slow, controlled movements, maintaining tension on the band throughout.</image:title>
<image:caption>Modified Plank (Lats, Core, and Hip Flexors) Start on your hands and knees, with your hands directly under your shoulders and your knees under your hips. Extend one leg straight behind you, keeping your hips level, and engage your core. Reach the opposite arm forward, stretching the body out in opposite directions. Hold for 20–30 seconds, then switch sides. Repeat for 2–3 sets. Avoid letting your hips sag. Keep your core engaged and focus on maintaining a straight line from your head to your toes.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Essential Baby Registry Items - We love this beautiful bedside sleeper! You can get the bassinet add on if you’d prefer to have rails around the entire structure. This is a great option if you want baby close to you without fully co-sleeping. Particularly when it comes to those late night feeds, this sleeper is a convenient option to just reaching over and grab baby, no need to get out of bed!</image:title>
<image:caption>We understand that there are those who choose to safely co-sleep with their little one. However, we still feel this bassinet would be helpful to you! This recommended sleeper we selected has an option to add “rolling casters”. Adding these wheels to your bassinet can add a huge convenience to you during the day. For example, when your little one is sleeping and you’d like to get things done around the house, you can still wheel them to the room with you! We understand many hours of the baby sleeping will be safely tucked on mom, but it is good to keep in mind that babies typically spend 16-18 hours a day sleeping in their first few months. With that being said, it is nice to have a quality place to put them when your arms are occupied by other things around the house!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Essential Baby Registry Items - We won’t get too deep into baby clothes, since this is an area you can add so much flare based on gender, personality and style you are going with! We would recommend getting 5-7 basic bodysuits or rompers, and about 4-6 footies (we love the convenience of zip or magnet footies!). There are varying opinions when you get into the topic of baby clothes, brand, fabric, etc. But have you ever seen “TOG” when looking at sleep sacks, blankets, or other baby clothing items online, and wondered what in the world you’re suppose to choose?</image:title>
<image:caption>TOG stands for “thermal overall grade” and is essentially the thickness of a sleep sack and how warm it will keep baby. So…what temperature do you keep your home? You want to base the TOG you buy your child off of the temperature of their sleeping environment. Thanks to Family Sleep Institute, we included a picture of their recommended clothing layers and TOG size based on room temperature.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Essential Baby Registry Items - Feeding can be one of the most time-consuming parts of caring for a newborn, so having the right tools and support can make all the difference. One of my favorite resources as a nursing mom, was my “baby cart”. Making one of these carts has so many benefits. Mainly, that it can travel around the house with you! You won’t feel bound to one corner of the house where all your things are that you want during a feeding session. Once you consolidate all those items to your baby cart, you can feel the freedom to be in different areas of the house, which ultimately can benefit your mental health as well! I highly recommend getting this ready and personalizing your own cart. Here is how I’d recommend organizing it:</image:title>
<image:caption>Tier 1: Easy to grab for mom & baby: Consider getting organizers such as these to make it easier as you put the different levels together! For this first tier, think easy to grab items not just for baby, but for mom too! Items that you’d want while breastfeeding and/or pumping. For mom things like snacks, books you might want to read, a place for your drink, electrolyte mixes. For baby some ideas might be a pacifier, a journal where you record feeds, a light (also included in the feeding section of the registry guide), a milk collector. Any item that you find yourself wanting during a feeding session, this is a great spot for it! Tier 2: Breastfeeding and nipple care items: If you are pumping, this is a great place to store your pump and all the parts that go along with that. Also, think any nipple care items like your silverette’s, nursing pads, nipple creams, anything you apply to your nipples after a feed! Tier 3: Baby diaper changing gear: For this lower level you want anything that will help you after feeding baby! Diapers, burp clothes, blankets, and extra outfits (when the inevitable blowout happens).</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Navigating the Holidays While Pregnant - Here are a few thoughtful and practical gift ideas that you can share with those who might be asking:</image:title>
<image:caption>Pregnancy Pillow: A good pregnancy pillow can help with comfort while sleeping or relaxing. These pillows provide support for your growing belly, back, and legs, ensuring better rest during those sleepless nights. Seriously, it can make a huge difference! Maternity Clothes: A stylish, comfortable pair of maternity leggings or a cozy sweater can make a world of difference as your body changes. Asking for clothes that can also transition into postpartum, easy-to-access nursing, makes it even better! Here are a few items to give you ideas: sweatshirt, relaxed nursing t-shirt, or a cute top. It is a great feeling to put on an outfit that makes you feel confident! Self-care Items: Treat yourself to some relaxation by requesting items like an herbal bath mix, some essential oils that you’ve been wanting to splurge on for birth (like clary sage, lavender, frankincense, etc.), a diffuser to use for these oils, a heating pad that could help bring a little relief. These are some ideas, but really any item you’ve had your eye on that you can’t bring yourself to splurge on, that could be the perfect self-care item to ask for! Books for Pregnancy, or New Parents: Whether it’s a parenting book or a fun, pregnancy-themed read, books can be a great way to unwind and prepare for your baby’s arrival. Here are some of our favorites: The Fourth Trimester, Real Food for Pregnancy, Ina May’s Guide to Childbirth, or Functional Maternity, just to name a few!</image:caption>

<image:caption>The psoas muscles, located deep in the lower back and pelvis, play a key role in stabilizing the spine and supporting the pelvic region. During pregnancy, hormonal changes and the growing weight of the baby can place extra strain on the psoas, causing it to become tight or imbalanced. This tightness can contribute to discomfort, pelvic pain, and even lower back pain. There are several exercises to release and lengthen your psoas muscles, but it is important to work on these throughout pregnancy</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Managing Pregnancy Symptoms: Your Survival Guide - Stretching Hip Flexor</image:title>
<image:caption>These muscles, which connect the pelvis to the lower spine, can become strained from prolonged sitting, poor posture, or the weight of the baby. When the hip flexors are tight, they can pull on the pelvis, contributing to discomfort, lower back pain, and even effect ideal decent of the baby into the pelvis. Gentle stretching of the hip flexors helps to lengthen these muscles, release tension, and improve flexibility, which in turn can reduce pelvic pressure and alleviate pain. Incorporating hip flexor stretches into your daily routine can improve posture, relieve strain on the pelvic joints, and help you feel more comfortable as your body adapts to pregnancy.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - A Holistic Approach to Gestational Diabetes - My "Wait, What?" Moment</image:title>
<image:caption>I feel really blessed that in my own pregnancy, my blood sugar started giving some signs of needing help pretty early on. It was shocking though when the first test came back high and then continual monitoring was showing spikes all over the place. My heart sank in disbelief many times in those days of trying to get to the bottom of it. I mean, I was eating healthy, staying active, and taking care of myself—what was I doing wrong? It felt overwhelming, but I reminded myself that gestational diabetes doesn’t happen because you’ve done something wrong. Pregnancy changes our bodies in so many ways, and sometimes that includes how we process sugar. Gestational diabetes happens when your body has trouble managing sugar (glucose) during pregnancy. Normally, your body uses insulin, a hormone that helps move sugar from your blood into your cells for energy. But during pregnancy, your body produces hormones (like human placental lactogen) that can make your cells more resistant to insulin. So with this in mind, instead of blaming myself, I started looking for ways to manage it holistically.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - A Holistic Approach to Gestational Diabetes - So let's get practical:</image:title>
<image:caption>Each pregnancy and woman is unique to what will work for her when addressing gestational diabetes but here are some practical tips to keep in mind with a holistic approach of treatment: Combine complex carbs (whole grains, vegetables) with proteins (chicken, fish, beans) and healthy fats (avocados, nuts). This helps stabilize blood sugar levels. Focus on non-starchy vegetables like leafy greens, broccoli, and peppers to fill your plate without spiking blood sugar. Opt for whole grains like quinoa, brown rice, and whole-wheat bread. Including fiber-rich foods slows digestion, helping prevent blood sugar spikes. Stick to smaller, more frequent meals. Eating every 2-3 hours can help keep blood sugar stable. Always have a protein snack on hand and pairing it with a healthy fat can make it even better! Be mindful of portion sizes for carbs—keep them consistent to prevent blood sugar fluctuations. Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Staying hydrated can support blood sugar control and prevent dehydration, which can worsen insulin resistance. Include foods like Greek yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, and kimchi for gut health, which can have a positive effect on blood sugar regulation. Consider taking a quality probiotic supplement as well. Practice mindful eating by focusing on your food, hunger cues, chewing slowly, and avoiding distractions. Take time to relax when eating your meals.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Communicating Your Birth Preferences - What are birth preferences?</image:title>
<image:caption>A good starting point, what ARE and AREN’T birth preferences? Simply put, your birth preferences are your choices and preferences in how you would like your ideal birth and labor to unfold. These choices can reflect your personal belief system, values, expectations for your labor, comfort measures used, and beyond. These preferences can reflect a wide variety of aspects such as environment, support team, pain coping strategies, labor and delivery, medications and interventions, immediate postpartum…you see how the list can go on and on.</image:caption>
</image:image>

<image:title>Blog - Communicating Your Birth Preferences - Checking-in with yourself</image:title>
<image:caption>To understand what your priorities are, setting aside the time to self-reflect will be important in pregnancy. A good place to begin is envisioning your birth space, how does it feel? Consider all five senses when thinking on this, what are you listening to? What smells are going on around you? Who is touching you? What are you wanting to hear? What are you wanting to snack on? This simple reflection might surprise you in what you are hoping for. Many women struggle with picturing their ideal birth in case it won’t happen…but what if it does? Before ever putting pen to paper, checking-in with yourself will be an important component moving forward. During your reflection things that are more significant to you might come to mind, not what is essential to your best friend, mom, or sister, but to you. It’s ok if you don’t understand all your options at this point, but what feels most crucial? This can also help guide you in how you initially form your birth team. Next, getting a grasp on things that will be available to you and WHY they are offered to you, such as: cervical checks in pregnancy and labor, membrane sweeps, pain coping measures, medications, these are just a few things that are good talking points with your provider. What is their birth philosophy and when do they deem certain interventions as appropriate or necessary, and are you comfortable with that? Their reasoning might make you feel at peace with a decision, or may make you realize it is unnecessary. No matter where you land on certain issues, you will begin to form opinions.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Communicating Your Birth Preferences - Evaluating your preferences</image:title>
<image:caption>Now that we have preferences formed, what is the most effective way to communicate them? Keeping a physical copy of these preferences short and sweet (one page) will be most effective, along with using a draft to bring in with you to prenatal visits and having several conversations with your provider prior to the onset of labor. Some birth preference templates (several pages long) can be overwhelming to a provider, we want to limit this! Using your birth preference sheet in conjunction with effective prenatal visits and communication will be where a lot of understanding happens. Don’t wait until you come in with your birth preferences sheet at the onset of labor to be the first time you are revealing your preferences. The hope of this sheet is to use it as a communication tool throughout your prenatal experience. When you finalize your preferences in your last prenatal visits have your provider sign and scan it into your file to ensure you know it is there for the rest of the team to see. Also, keep a hard copy in your birth bag as a back up! You can hang this in your room where you will be giving birth as a visual reminder to the team in your space.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Communicating Your Birth Preferences - The role of a doula in formulating & communicating your preferences</image:title>
<image:caption>At this point you might realize just how involved it can feel to effectively learn, decide, communicate and walk-through your variety of birth preferences. Que the doula…at Ezer Birth we see your prenatal journey as a perfect time to guide and support you through education, conversation, and all the emotions that come with that! A doula can help you not only understand and navigate different birth options, but also hold a safe space for your emotional processing. There isn’t always a clear “right” answer in these decisions and we hope to be with you as you process what is best for you and your family. Not only is a doula a great companion in your education and emotional journey, but we also facilitate discussions around preferences with your healthcare team. You might know what conversations you want to have, but feel unsure how to approach them. We are here for you! As your advocate and birth companion expert, we have experience in guiding conversations with particular questions that might feel difficult to walk through. No matter the birthing location, as your doula, we can provide information about various interventions and practices. Having this knowledge in your back pocket helps in making informed decisions about your birth preferences. Another helpful component a doula helps you walk through is processing and creating a “plan b”. With the unpredictable nature of birth, having a backup plan can be beneficial. We try to broach this conversation with empathy and sensitivity, explaining the potential scenarios. Doing this can help you prepare for the changes that might unfold in labor without feeling out of control. We want you still as an active participant in decisions even when things might not go “as planned”. As your doula, our presence will not change, and we will walk with you in this process.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - 5 Reasons You Should Hire a Doula - The environment in which you give birth profoundly influences your experience. A doula helps you create a birthing space that resonates with peace and comfort, considering everything from the people you wish to have present to the sensory elements like lighting, sounds, and smells.</image:title>
<image:caption>By thoughtfully addressing these factors, a doula assists in crafting a tranquil and supportive atmosphere that aligns with your vision of a positive birth experience. This nurturing space allows you to surrender to the process with confidence, knowing that your surroundings support your needs and desires. Even when a birth space needs to change, the consistent presence of your doula can carry the steadfast comfort you need when you might feel out of control in labor.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - 5 Reasons You Should Hire a Doula - Contrary to the doula taking a partners place, the doula enhances the partners presence. Birth is a deeply personal and a shared journey. We understand your partner plays a crucial role in this experience. A doula offers invaluable support to your partner, providing them with tools, guidance, and reassurance. This support helps them to be fully present with you, without the burden of managing logistics or feeling overwhelmed. By empowering your partner to offer emotional and physical comfort, a doula strengthens the bond between you both, making this transformative time even more profound and connected.</image:title>
<image:caption>We like to use a simple analogy of a wedding day to really illustrate how we view our role. When we have a wedding there is so much work put into the day, we hire a wedding planner to ensure all the details of the day are in place, allowing you and your partner to fully take in the beauty of this life changing experience. Likewise, we see ourselves as the “wedding planner” of your birth. Having walked with you in your pregnancy we understand your preferences, how you and your partner support one another, and how you envision your birth. With this work done in pregnancy, our heart is to let you and your partner relax into one another and embrace this big day! We are your “birth planners” and our heart is to deepen your bond within your partnership. When you look back on the day you gave birth our goal isn’t to be remembered, but for you to remember your partner as your main person who supported you in a way that made you feel loved and peaceful.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - 5 Reasons You Should Hire a Doula - In the midst of labor’s intensity, it can be easy to lose sight of your motivations and goals. A doula’s unwavering emotional presence and commitment to your well-being serve as a reminder of your “why”—the deep-rooted reasons behind your desire to welcome a new life into the world.</image:title>
<image:caption>Our encouragement and reassurance help you stay focused and positive, regardless of how your birth story unfolds. As we walk with you prenatally we aim to understand your “why”, what truths help ground you in the present moment when your mind might start to wander. These are the important moments we will revisit in labor in order to help you cope, remind you of truth, and bring you back into your “why”. With a doula’s support, you remain anchored in your purpose, embracing the journey with grace and strength.</image:caption>

<image:caption>As a starting point, we believe an understanding of the miraculous transformations happening within your body is crucial. It is built within our care to provide a comprehensive curriculum that begins with the head knowledge of a physiological birth (you can find that curriculum here). Recognizing the intricate design of the birthing process in how our body facilitates this new life within is an amazing place to begin when embracing the changes that are taking place. Trusting in this process, and forming your belief around birth is the foundation in which every other decision will be formed.</image:caption>

We see ourselves not just as birth educators, but as compassionate companions, walking alongside you as you navigate this transformative process. Our aim is to gently facilitate your exploration of surrender, engaging in meaningful conversations and providing supportive education tailored to your unique journey. Throughout our time together, we'll pose thought-provoking questions to help you uncover any hidden internal barriers or fears that may be holding you back. <image:title>Blog - What does evidence based care mean?</image:title>
<image:caption>1: Grounded in Research for Pregnant Women First and foremost, evidence-based care is grounded in research specifically conducted on pregnant women. It's important to recognize that the physiological changes during pregnancy are unique and complex to women. Research conducted on non-pregnant individuals, whether men or women, cannot accurately represent the needs of pregnant women. Evidence-based practices ensure that the recommendations and interventions provided are relevant, safe, and effective for expectant mothers. Here is an evidence-based tip based on research done on pregnant women! You’ve probably heard that protein is essential for everyone, but did you know that some of the advice given to pregnant women about protein was initially based on studies of non-pregnant people? When it comes to pregnancy, the demands on your body are much higher. You're not just maintaining your own body anymore; you're also growing a whole new little one! Researchers started recommending increased protein intake for pregnant women based on the general guidelines used for non-pregnant adults. But here's where things got a bit tricky because the study was not conducted on pregnant women… It turns out that basing protein needs from non-pregnant standards wasn’t enough to meet the unique needs of pregnant women. Studies specifically conducted on pregnant women showed that their protein requirements were actually quite different. Here’s what the research found: Not Just More Protein, But the Right Kind: Initially, the advice was just to eat more protein. However, pregnant women need not just more protein but also specific types of amino acids that are crucial for fetal development. Simply upping the protein intake without considering the quality and type of protein wasn't as beneficial. Timing Matters: Research on pregnant women indicated that spreading protein intake throughout the day was more beneficial than consuming large amounts at once. This helps with better absorption and utilization by both the mother and the developing baby. Individual Variability: Pregnant women's protein needs vary depending on factors like their stage of pregnancy, activity level, and overall health. A one-size-fits-all increase based on non-pregnant guidelines often led to either insufficient or excessive intake. As doulas who LOVE nutrition, we want to really speak to the importance of nutrition FOR you! Instead of just following a generic guideline, incorporate whole foods, know the source, and listen to your body for adjustments.</image:caption>

<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/644062a0ff6fbb1b38176dfc/060bbcf3-cee0-4ced-8fea-318a27fdf4dd/DSC_0606-2.jpg</image:loc>
<image:title>Blog - What does evidence based care mean?</image:title>
<image:caption>2: It Promotes Trust with Your Provider When your healthcare provider uses evidence-based information, it fosters a trusting relationship. Knowing that your doula or healthcare provider bases their advice and interventions on solid research helps you feel more confident in their care. This trust is foundational to a positive birthing experience, as it allows you to feel secure and safe in the decisions being made for you and your baby’s health. Here is an example of a conversation that could be backed with evidence and foster trust: Expecting Mom: I have my gestational diabetes test coming up, and I'm feeling a bit apprehensive about it. I've heard mixed things about the glucola drink, and I'm not sure if it's the right choice for me. Provider: I hear you. The glucola test can be a source of anxiety for many moms-to-be. Let's explore some options together. While the glucola test is the standard screening method, there are evidence-based alternatives we can consider that may align better with your holistic approach to pregnancy. One option is postprandial meal testing, where you monitor your blood sugar levels after eating a meal. This method provides a more comprehensive picture of how your body processes glucose throughout the day. Research has shown that postprandial testing can be just as effective as the glucola test in identifying gestational diabetes, while also offering valuable insights into your dietary choices and blood sugar responses. Mom: That sounds much more in line with my values. How would I go about doing postprandial meal testing? Provider: After each meal for a given period of time, you would use a blood glucose monitor to test your blood sugar levels at specific intervals, such as one hour and two hours after eating. Keeping a diary of your meals and corresponding blood sugar readings can help identify patterns and trigger foods that may affect your glucose levels. This personalized approach empowers you to make informed dietary choices that support your health and well-being. Mom: That sounds like a holistic approach that resonates with me. I appreciate you offering this alternative and giving me the options! Provider: Of course! My desire is to provide you with evidence-based options that honor your unique journey and values. Whether it's the glucola test or postprandial meal testing, I'm here to support you every step of the way! This conversation illustrates how a evidence-based provider can offer alternatives to traditional interventions like the glucola test. By empowering women to make informed choices that align with their values and preferences, trust is fostered between the provider and the expecting mom.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - What does evidence based care mean?</image:title>
<image:caption>3: Tailored to Individual Needs Every pregnancy is unique, and evidence-based care takes this into account. It involves evaluating the latest research and integrating it into your individual preferences, needs, values and beliefs. This personalized approach ensures that the care you receive is not just “getting the job done”, but effective for you specifically, helping your care be well rounded and holistic in nature. Here’s an example of a personal preference that is discussed and understood with evidence-based research and care in mind. Imagine you're crafting your birth plan, and you have a particular desire, you want to labor in the tub and ideally have a water birth too. It's something that is really important to you as you feel it will help relax you and ground you in ways that will help you manage and have a natural birth FOR you! Now, let's bring in the evidence-based care aspect. Your birth team, whether it's your OB-GYN, midwife, or doula, listens to your preference and takes the time to discuss the benefits and potential considerations of water birth based on research findings. They might say something like: "Hey there, mama! I see that you're interested in having a water birth, and I love that you're taking an active role in planning your birth experience. Let's chat about the evidence surrounding water birth to ensure we make the best decision for you and your baby." Your provider goes on to share evidence-based insights: "Research has shown that water immersion during labor can help reduce pain and promote relaxation, which can lead to shorter labors and less need for medical intervention. Additionally, being in the water can enhance your sense of privacy and control, creating a more positive birthing experience." But they also consider your individual circumstances: "However, it's essential to consider factors like your medical history, any existing health conditions, and your birth team’s experiences and comfort levels in water births. Based on your overall health and that your team is familiar and trained in water births, I believe that a water birth is a safe and empowering option for you… and I even encourage it to a lot of my clients to just try!” Your healthcare provider should combine your preferences with evidence-based research to tailor recommendations that align with your desires and circumstances. By fostering open communication and informed decision-making, they should help you feel empowered and confident as you prepare for the birth of your precious little one!</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - What does evidence based care mean?</image:title>
<image:caption>4: Safe and Effective The primary goal of evidence-based care is to ensure safety and effectiveness. By relying on research findings, healthcare providers can recommend practices and interventions that have been proven to have good outcomes. This reduces the likelihood of complications and enhances the overall health and well-being of both mother and baby. For instance, let’s look at some evidence-based research on third trimester ultrasounds and their effectiveness: Third-trimester ultrasounds. While these scans are commonly used to check on your baby's growth and well-being, recent research suggests that they might not always improve outcomes as expected. While third-trimester ultrasounds are generally considered safe, some studies have raised questions about their effectiveness in improving outcomes for both mama and baby. In fact, research has shown that routine third-trimester ultrasounds may not necessarily lead to better health outcomes or reduce the risk of complications during labor and delivery. While third-trimester ultrasounds can provide valuable information about your baby's growth and development, it's essential to trust your intuition and have open, honest conversations with your healthcare provider about your preferences and concerns. If you feel uncomfortable or unsure about undergoing a third-trimester ultrasound, it's okay to speak up and explore other options. Instead of relying solely on routine third-trimester ultrasounds, consider incorporating other methods of monitoring your baby's well-being, such as regular prenatal check-ups, fetal movement monitoring, and listening to your intuition. These holistic approaches can provide valuable insights into your baby's health and well-being without the need for additional medical interventions. Support and conversation should ALWAYS be given to you in making informed choices. Whether you decide to proceed with a third-trimester ultrasound or explore alternative options, your provider should be aware of both safety and effectiveness and give compassionate guidance on steps forward.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - What does evidence based care mean?</image:title>
<image:caption>5: Up-to-Date Information The field of healthcare is constantly evolving, with new research emerging regularly. Evidence-based care involves staying up-to-date with the latest studies and guidelines. This means that the care you receive is based on the most current and accurate information available, ensuring the best possible outcomes. Your birth team should continuously educate themselves on the latest findings and updates in maternal care. This commitment to ongoing learning ensures that their recommendations reflect the most recent findings and their dedication to look into these, and always be learning. As we love prenatal nutrition, let’s use up-to-date information to debunk the myth of “eating for two”: While it might sound tempting to indulge in extra servings of your favorite foods during pregnancy, the truth is, this age-old advice isn't rooted in evidence-based research. For generations, expecting mamas have been told that pregnancy is a time to double-up on food intake to support their growing baby. But here's the reality check: you don't actually need to eat twice as much during pregnancy. Recent evidence-based research has shown that quality, not quantity, is key when it comes to nutrition during pregnancy. While it's essential to nourish your body and your baby with a well-balanced diet, overeating can lead to unnecessary weight gain and potential health risks for both mama and baby. Instead of focusing on "eating for two," consider working with your pregnancy care provider or prenatal nutritionist (That’s us! Schedule HERE) to create a personalized nutrition plan that meets your unique needs and preferences. This might include incorporating nutrient-dense foods like fruits, vegetables, quality proteins, and whole grains into your diet while listening to your body's hunger and fullness cues through intuitive eating.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Preparing For Your Unmedicated Hosptial Birth - Walking out of the clinic, you can't shake the feeling of unease. Are you truly understanding everything that is happening in this pregnancy? You brush it off as just part of the process, thinking, "This is just what you do, I guess."</image:title>
<image:caption>Now, contrast this with a completely different experience. You see a provider that takes the time to get to know you, and your concerns. In these appointments, there is a sense of collaboration rather than being put on the spot. You feel empowered to ask questions, knowing that your provider values your input and would take the time to address your concerns.</image:caption>

<image:title>Birth Stories - At Home Birth - I got out of bed around 6:30 AM to move around and do more movements - I also really wanted orange juice. My contractions were still not very regular at this point but I felt so much peace in that early morning, I knew God was with me in the midst of it all. I laid back down and slept for a few hours.</image:title>
<image:caption>Kathryn and Heather came back over that morning to show me some different movements again that would help with realigning Goldie’s head. Around 11:00 I drank the castor oil concoction. Yum. That stayed down for about 30 minutes and I puked it up. At 12:30, I drank more. And again, I puked it up. I let Laney know and she told me if I wasn’t in a good rhythm by 5:00, we’d need to revisit the plan for my birth but to take the next hour to try and relax and give myself a break and that she would be over around 2:00 to check on us. I cried some more. I was so confused why nothing was progressing and I was frustrated. James rubbed my back and told me that it would all be okay, to talk to her, and to pray. Around 1:00 my contractions started to get closer. By 2:00 they were 6 minutes apart, but I wasn’t fully convinced I was in active labor yet. To be honest, I was afraid to get my hopes up. James and I moved into Goldie’s room and he put on my playlist for her birth. Laney and Kate arrived around 2:30 and checked my vitals and Goldie’s heart rate and told me they would be staying, it was actually happening. I could relax into the process. At this point I could still interact between contractions. They were painful, but I had made my mind up that I wasn’t going to fight against them. I trusted my body. I spent most of my pregnancy preparing my mind for this moment. I knew God created my body to carry and birth my baby. I knew that all I had to do was keep breathing. I made the decision to surrender to whatever birth looked like.</image:caption>

<image:title>Birth Stories - When Pregnancy Doesn’t Go “According to Plan” - They placed my spinal block on the operating room table while the OR crew swirled around me like a pit crew. They let me pick a playlist to play for the surgery and I’m so grateful I had some familiar country music to listen to that helped me relax. I breathed through the tugging, which was more aggressive than I anticipated, and tuned out the voices. I did my best to breathe through it all and some waves of nausea came and went. I even felt faint at one point. Normally I have an iron stomach and genuine curiosity for all things medical but quickly learned I don’t feel the same way being the patient. In less than 10 minutes my baby girl was born at 12:08 am. It took her a minute to cry, the longest minute of my life but suddenly the tiniest, high-pitched cry I’ve ever heard erupted into the room and everyone breathed a sigh of relief. At 32 weeks and 5 days, my beautiful baby girl was born, 7 weeks early but otherwise totally healthy, her spine totally closed, and everything we had hoped for with the surgery seemed to have worked.</image:title>
<image:caption>They honored my request to wait a few minutes to cut her cord, something I was so grateful for to have honored even with all the rest of my options being taken away. They proudly held her up for me to see with a little hat and blanket wrapped around her with a lining of plastic wrap against her tiny 3lb 10oz body to keep her tiny body warm. My MIL snapped a few pictures, and just like that my sweet girl was whisked away to the NICU to make sure she was stabilized and breathing properly. It would be another 8 hours before I saw my baby again. No skin to skin. No golden hour. No nursing. No bonding. Nothing I had hoped and dreamed for.</image:caption>

<image:title>Birth Stories - When Pregnancy Doesn’t Go “According to Plan” - The nerve pain became excruciating to the point where I was screaming for help. They rolled me down to a CT scan worried I was having a pulmonary embolism. Thankfully that was not the case but at the edge of the scan they spotted something unexpected. A massive blood clot in my leg. I had no symptoms, no pain, no swelling, nothing to indicate it was there. If my daughter hadn’t flipped breech, if I hadn’t had the C-section, if I hadn’t had the random nerve pain (we still have no idea what caused that), we never would have found the blood clot. We thankfully were able to totally dissolve it with blood thinners but I still am so thankful for the Lords faithfulness with orchestrating all of that. By then I was truly exhausted. Barely any sleep 24 hours later, barely seeing my daughter, pumping a massive amount of milk (my milk came in so strong I could have fed 3 babies), and the stress of a very scary medical finding I was tapped out. Thankfully my husband arrived from Montana the next morning and we had our daughter to focus on.</image:title>
<image:caption>While it wasn’t the birth I had hoped for, there were still so many aspects I still felt I was able to advocate for even with a max-intervention C-section. Much of my hospital stay taught me I can still advocate for myself and my baby while admitted and that hospital policy is not law! Our daughter spent 30 very uneventful days in the NICU and came home breastfeeding and is absolutely thriving to this day. Thankfully everything we hoped the surgery would do for her has worked. I pray my next birth can be redemptive and healing after such a stressful experience but I know it will all happen exactly as it should. Sometimes the Lords plans are much greater than ours and I’m beyond thankful for modern medicine for helping me and my daughter when we needed it.</image:caption>
