Our Stories & How We Became “Ezer”
Summer Diaries | Week 1: The Heart Behind Ezer Birth
Welcome to Summer Diaries—our new summer series where we’re opening the door to share more of who we are, what we do, and why we do it. If you’ve ever wondered what it looks like to walk alongside women during one of the most transformational times of their lives, or you’re simply curious about birth work, we hope this can be a transparent look into what this work is to us!
This week, we’re starting where all good things begin—with our story. The story of Ezer Birth, and how we, Kathryn and Heather, came together to build this business from a shared calling and a lot of faith.
Meet Kathryn: A Heart for Women, A Calling to Birth
Kathryn’s journey into birth work began in a different, but deeply connected, place—women’s ministry. From early on, she had a heart for walking with women through the highs and lows of life, and it became clear that she wanted to serve in a space where presence, support, and guidance were needed most.
That desire led her to midwifery school. She loved learning the intricacies of birth and being near the sacred process of life beginning—but something felt incomplete. During her apprenticeship, she realized what she longed for most was to be emotionally and educationally present for women—to prepare them deeply, support them wholly, and walk beside them in a relational way that clinical care often doesn’t allow space for.
So, she stepped away from midwifery and began the work of Ezer Birth—a business rooted in the kind of care she originally envisioned. Care that is informed, emotionally rich, spiritually grounded, and never rushed. Her heart for this work remains simple but profound: to help women feel seen, strong, and supported through one of life’s most powerful transitions.
Meet Heather: Nourishment, Perspective, and Personal Transformation
Heather’s journey to birth work began with a deep love for nourishment. With her Bachelors in Nutrition, she’s always been passionate about helping people understand how to care for their bodies well. But for a long time, she didn’t quite know how to narrow that passion into a focused calling—until she became pregnant.
That season changed everything.
Heather was shocked by how little nutritional support and education were available to women during pregnancy. If you wanted to learn this information, you really had to seek it out. That gap stirred something in her. As she dove deeper into the world of physiological birth, something shifted—not only in her mind but in her entire perspective. Beginning from a place where she blindly and completely trusted western medicine, she had always viewed birth as a medical event. But through education, research, and her own experience, she began to see birth as something designed —something her body was made to do, not fear.
That knowledge gave her confidence, and that confidence carried her through two natural, physiological water births—her sons born just 13 months apart. After her own transformative experiences, she couldn’t keep this to herself. She continued her studies in perinatal nutrition and became a certified birth doula so she could advocate for and walk with other women in this powerful time of life.
Two Stories, One Calling
What happened next is the kind of story we still are amazed by when we reflect together.
As Heather was pursuing her doula certification, she began dreaming up business names—and was drawn to one word in particular: Ezer. She had done a deep dive into the word’s meaning (if you haven’t read our post on it, go back and check it out!), and was captivated by its strength. In Hebrew, ezer means “helper”—but not a soft, secondary helper. It’s used to describe the kind of help God offers—strong, and essential.
Little did she know, Kathryn had already started a business with that exact name.
Yes, seriously. You can’t make this stuff up.
Once we connected and shared our hearts behind this work, it became abundantly clear—this partnership wasn’t random. It was placed. We were both individually called to this work, and we believe God brought us together to do it better, together.
Since then, as co-owners, we’ve built Ezer Birth into something we’re deeply proud of. A birth doula business rooted in education, presence, and trust. A space where women are equipped and empowered, and where every birth story is honored as sacred.
Why We’re Here
At Ezer Birth, we don’t just show up when labor starts. We come alongside you long before that—educating, preparing, listening, and being there for the moments in between. We believe birth is not a medical event, but a deeply personal, emotional, and spiritual experience. And we believe women deserve more than just information—they deserve care that sees the whole person.
As we share more throughout this Summer Diaries series, we hope you’ll feel encouraged, inspired, and reminded that you’re not alone. Whether you’re pregnant, postpartum, or just birth-curious, there’s a place for you here.
Thank you for being here. We’re just getting started.
With love,
Heather & Kathryn
